He wants to set up some explosive booby traps around his land to deter trespassers - little things for the outskirts, then progressively bigger bombs for anyone who's persistent enough to reach the small stuff and keep going. He doesn't want any explosions that are gonna kill someone instantly, but maiming is all right for the biggest ones.

The bombs themselves are not a problem. They are not however, akin to landmines, as they're electronically detonated, with the signal having to come from within a certain range.

I'm not going to say it wouldn't be possible for an electronic surveillance system alert to trigger the detonator in turn, but that is not part of the package as far as what I'm supplying goes. Other options for him would include having a surveillance system alert him so that he could detonate the explosive, or he could simply lie in wait. [If he's the obsessive sort.]
